View source for James Randi e seu Famigerado Desafio Paranormal

Carl Sagan, um falecido cético membro fundador do CSICOP e amigo de James Randi, se referiu a Randi nesses termos em seu livro “O Mundo Assombrado Pelos Demônios” (1995): “Como todos nós, ele (Randi) é imperfeito: às vezes Randi é intolerante e arrogante, incapaz de empatia para com as fraquezas humanas que estão por baixo da credulidade.” (páginas 226 e 227 da edição brasileira, Companhia das Letras, 1997).

Isso dito acima é a chave para a decifração do Enigma James Randi.

Randi tem tido uma atuação bastante benéfica sobre a sociedade, ao militar feroz e diligentemente contra os pseudo paranormais tipo Thomas Green Morton e Uri Geller. Há uma outra face de Randi que não é benéfica para a sociedade. A face onde ele atua como pseudo cético, exagerando das críticas e deboches às alegações de paranormalidade.

Randi possui o famoso “Desafio Paranormal“, onde oferece um milhão de dólares para quem provar ser um paranormal real. Há muitos problemas nesse desafio. Os termos do desafio deixam o candidato em uma situação por demasiado frágil, pois que ele terá que permitir que Randi use o material (colhido por Randi nas investigações) da maneira que Randi quiser e, ao mesmo tempo, se comprometer a não processar Randi por nada do que vier a ser feito (cláusulas 3 e 7 do documento do desafio paranormal, neste link). Isso escancara as portas para o deboche, o escárnio, e, na linguagem da malandragem, o “esculacho” de Randi para com os “paranormais” incautos… (coisas que Randi simplesmente adora fazer!). Que problema há nisso? Bem, na verdade nenhum problema se Randi estiver testando o Super Homem, o Quarteto Fantástico, ou mesmo o Uri Geller e o Thomas Green Morton. Contudo, se Randi estiver testando as “alegações de anomalia estatística em sistemas aleatórios subatômicos hipoteticamente devido a psicocinese da mente humana sobre tais sistemas” (como é alegado pelos pesquisadores psi do PEAR), então a coisa fica bem complicada. Os esculachos de Randi passam a ser altamente danosos para o avanço do conhecimento científico nessas áreas já tão maculadas por preconceitos indevidos. O aval de Randi também não significaria nada nessas áreas, pois que mesmo Ray Hyman, amigo cético de Randi e consultor dele para questões estatísticas, lembra que em ciência não se estabelece uma verdade com apenas um teste, seja ele ministrado por Randi, Einstein, ou George Bush.

E o grande problema é que Randi tenta se meter em pesquisas como as do PEAR e similares, levando junto toda a sua cabedal bagagem esculachante.

Randi também é muito citado pela sua participação “decisiva” na investigação que a prestigiada revista científica Nature fez em 1988 nos laboratórios do pesquisador francês Benveniste, que alegava ter evidências empíricas da validade das medicações homeopáticas. Na verdade, a participação de Randi no episódio foi nula. Ele se limitou a atestar que não havia fraude do tipo detectável por ele. Além disso, ele mesmo agiu em um momento da investigação onde ele poderia ter fraudado os resultados de Benveniste, por ter sido ele (Randi) que abriu o envelope com os códigos. A atuação de Randi no episódio além disso se limitou a ficar fazendo brincadeirinhas no laboratório. Os artigos que demonstram isso que eu digo estão disponíveis nestes PDFs abaixo:

Um caso também interessante é o livro de Randi, Flim Flam. O pesquisador Puthoff alegou que havia 24 erros de Randi ao comentar as pesquisas parapsicológicas de Puthoff com Uri Geller. Randi rebateu dizendo que só havia um erro (e ainda prometeu mil dólares caso estivesse errado). De minha leitura da página de Randi onde ele explica o caso, fica claro que Randi cometeu bem mais que um erro somente (ainda que bem menos que 24). Pinóquio Puthoff. Pinóquio Randi…

Ah, but wait! Puthoff says, “[Randi] admitted he was wrong on all the points.” That’s a lie, Dr. Puthoff, and it’s a knowing lie, a purposeful deception, a mendacity. I said no such thing, and today, as then, I stand by the 24 points you refer to — ALL of them. E pouco mais àfrente: Still dealing with just the above two paragraphs by Puthoff, so chock-full of misinformation: “[Randi] said that a film of the Geller experiment made at SRI by famed photographer Zev Pressman was not made by him, but by us and we just put his name on it.” Nowhere in my writing does such a statement or even an inference to that effect, appear. I’ve always believed that Pressman filmed the farce, and have never made the statement that Puthoff quotes.

O escritor Michael Prescott investigou esse caso, leu o livro de Randi, Flim Flam segunda edição, e contactou algumas pessoas envolvidas nisso. Segundo ele no link abaixo:

Randi certainly does make this an issue in Flim-Flam. According to Randi, Targ and Puthoff “appended to [the film] – without his knowledge or permission – the name of Zev Pressman, the SRI photographer who had shot the film…. Pressman, said Targ and Puthoff, was present during [a particular series of] experiments. Not so, according to Pressman…. Most damning of all, Pressman said to others at SRI that he had been told the successful [tests] were done after he (Pressman)* had gone home for the day. So it appears the film was a reenactment … Pressman did not even know that Targ and Puthoff were issuing a statement, he did not sign it, and he did not give them permission to use his name. He knew nothing about most of what appeared under his name, and he disagreed with the part that he did know about.” (Italics in original.)

Prescott ainda informa que no livro The Geller Effect, o autor Playfair atesta que Pressman de fato desmentiu Randi. Neste livro está escrito: , “[Randi] turned, in a later book, Flim-Flam, to the professional photographer who had made the film, a Stanford employee named Zev Pressman, with an extraordinary series of unfounded allegations…. “Pressman flatly denied all of Randi’s allegations in two public statements, neither of which was even mentioned in the 1982 reissue of the book. ‘I made the film,’ said Pressman, ‘and my name appeared with my full knowledge and permission . . . Nothing was restaged or specially created . . . I have never met nor spoken to nor corresponded with Randi. The ‘revelations’ he attributes to me are pure fiction.‘”

Prescott ainda informa que obteve de Scott Rogo, famoso pesquisador parapsicológico, confirmação de que Rogo também perguntou a Pressman sobre o caso, obtendo confirmação da mentira de Randi.

Prescott obteve uma terceira fonte que confirma Puthoff nisso, contra Randi.

O caso é que Randi se baseou em informações que lhe foram passadas, segundo Randi, por pessoas que trabalhavam no SRI. Randi nunca disse quem eram essas pessoas, pessoas essas que, misteriosamente, temem imensamente serem identificadas… (apesar de se tratar de um caso bem trivial).

É nesse link acima que aparece uma carta de Puthoff, de abril de 2004, onde Puthoff reproduz a fala de Randi prometendo mil dólares a uma instituição de caridade se Puthoff provasse estar certo em um ponto qualquer dos 24. Randi não negou que tivesse prometido isso!

Além disso, nos quatro pontos abaixo eu achei que Randi de fato errou, e bastante… (do mesmo link acima, boring boring boring):

Acusação 7 de Randi em Flim Flam (p 34): After reprinting the Nature editorial Randi claims that he must give his own version of SRI paper, as SRI did not make paper available to him.

Puthoff rebate: SRI paper to which he refers was in same magazine as the editorial he reprinted, a few pages later … a document in the public domain, available in any technical library, permission for the use of which is obtained from the magazine as was done for the editorial.

Randi apresenta sua tréplica: I was not aware the paper was “public domain.” I would rather have published the original. It was damning. I asked permission of SRI, but was never answered. That says something, I think.

Meu Comentário: É impossível que Randi não soubesse que a revista Nature possui os direitos autorais do artigo, e que ele poderia conseguir junto a ela qualquer permissão que fosse necessária. Randi está mentindo nesse ponto.

Acusação 8 de Randi (p. 37): There was no way that I could get to see the SRI film. Only the elite of the world of science and journalism were invited (to the Columbia symposium).

Puthoff rebate: The Columbia symposium was widely known to be an open symposium to which any interested individual could come and for which no invitations were required.

Randi apresenta sua tréplica: Hearing of the film, I tried to contact Dr. Gerald Feinberg, at Columbia, who sponsored the showing. I was unable to do so, and was unaware that it was an open showing. In any case, I certainly was not invited, in spite of my widely known interest.

Meu Comentário: Randi está reclamando de não ter recebido um convite formal e personalizado para o evento. Ele diz, em Flim Flam, que não houve maneira dele conseguir ver o filme, e que somente uma elite foi convidada. Se ele de fato tivesse tentado ver o filme, tivesse se interessado e se informado a respeito do evento no “Columbia Symposium”, ele teria sabido que é um evento público ao qual ele poderia ir. O argumento de Randi é infantil e mentiroso.

Acusação 9 de Randi (p 37): Randi would have the reader believe that the compass sequence and spoon-bending sequence of the SRI film “Experiments with Uri Geller” are examples of where SRI scientists were taken in by magic tricks.

Puthoff rebate: With regard to the compass sequence the film narration states: “The following is an experiment which in retrospect we consider unsatisfactory as it didn’t meet our protocol standards. Here the task is to deflect the compass needle . . . However, according to our protocol, if we could in any way debunk the experiment and produce the effects by any other means, then that experiment was considered null and void even if there were no indications that anything untoward happened. In this case, we found later that these types of deflections could be produced by a small piece of metal, so small in fact that they could not be detected by the magnetometer. Therefore, even though we had no evidence of this, we still considered the experiment inconclusive and an unsatisfactory type of experiment altogether.”

With regard to the spoon-bending sequence, the film states: One of Geller’s main attributes that had been reported to us was that he was able to bend metal. . . In the laboratory we did not find him able to do so. . . [It] becomes clear in watching this film that simple photo interpretation is insufficient to determine whether the metal is bent by normal or paranormal means . . . It is not clear whether the spoon is being bent because he has extraordinarily strong fingers and good control of micro-manipulatory movements, or whether, in fact, the spoon ‘turns to plastic’ in his hands, as he claims.”

Randi apresenta sua tréplica: Yes, the film contains a disclaimer. Then why, gentlemen, were these “inconclusive and . . . unsatisfactory” sequences included in a “scientific” film at a leading university in this official unveiling of the wonders of the “Psychic World” discovered at Stanford Research Institute, a leading center of scientific endeavor? To add glamour and to fluff up a very poor effort, obviously. The film belongs with the Mack Sennett epics.

Meus Comentários: Randi admite que o filme continha o alerta de que nem o dobramento da colher e nem o desvio da bússola haviam sido comprovados pelos pesquisadores. Ficou claro que Randi exagerou, mentiu, nesse ponto em seu livro Flim Flam. Mas… ele não quer admitir. Veja que ele substitui a acusação inicial (to be taken in by Geller, ou seja, foram enganados por Geller) pela acusação de sua tréplica (to add glamour, ou seja, os pesquisadores não estavam mais sendo enganados, e sim estavam querendo adicionar glamour ao filme…). A diferença da acusação inicial, to be taken in, para a acusação final, to want to add glamour, é simplesmente astronômica. Randi mente.

Acusação 16 de Randi (p. 59): In previous tests in Israel, a psychologist agreed to examine Geller’s claims, with the agreement that if the results were not positive, no report would be issued . . . Did Geller have the same arrangement with the boys at SRI before he agreed to be tested there? I’ll bet he did!

Puthoff rebate: Negative results on compass deflection and metal bending are reported in the SRI film “Experiments with Uri Geller,” Columbia Physics Colloquium, March 6, 1973, and negative results on metal bending and 100-envelope clairvoyance test are reported in Nature, October, 1974.

Randi apresenta sua tréplica: Notice that T&P refuse to answer direct questions! Here they skirt the implication, never saying that they did not have any such arrangement with Geller. To have no negative tests — a 100 percent success — would be too good. (I’ll still bet that Geller had the boys over a barrel with such an arrangement!)

Meus Comentários: Puthoff claramente prova que não tinha nenhum acordo com Geller de ocultar resultados insatisfatórios. Ele diz que relatou o insucesso de Geller em atuar sobre uma bússola. Isso é altamente importante, se lembrarmos que Geller é o homem que conserta relógios quebrados só de olhá-los… Apesar disso, Randi insiste como se Puthoff tivesse tal acordo de ocultação de insucessos com Geller. Randi mente mais uma vez.

Randi mentiu nos quatro itens acima, e mentiu também com relação ao fotógrafo Pressman. Além disso, ele mesmo admitiu estar errado em um dos 24 pontos. Isso dá seis erros dele (ou seis mentiras, se formos rigorosos). Em 24 pontos isso não é nada discreto… (e as instituições de caridade ainda estão esperando pelos mil dólares que ele prometeu dar).

Quer dizer então que de cada quatro afirmações de Randi podemos esperar que pelo menos uma seja mentira? A mim fica claro que sim.

Randi então é uma pessoa que possui virtudes, e que possui uma atuação social importante. Mas também é uma pessoa que incorre em grosserias contraproducentes, desnecessárias, e perigosas, e é também uma pessoa que manipula informações, joga com mentira, etc.

Esse é James Randi. O resto, é Ilusionismo…
